_Ohio State’s Disappointing Standout Receives Huge Vote of Confidence_
Columbus, OH – Ohio State wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba has been a bit of a disappointment this season, at least compared to the lofty expectations that surrounded him. After a breakout sophomore season in which he caught 95 passes for 1,606 yards and 9 touchdowns, Smith-Njigba was expected to be one of the top receivers in the country.
However, through the first 10 games of the season, Smith-Njigba has caught just 55 passes for 727 yards and 3 touchdowns. While those numbers are still respectable, they are a significant drop-off from what he produced last season.
Despite his disappointing season, Smith-Njigba received a huge vote of confidence from Ohio State head coach Ryan Day on Tuesday. Day, who has been criticized for his handling of Smith-Njigba’s playing time, praised the receiver’s work ethic and dedication to the team.
“Jaxon is a guy who has been through a lot this season,” Day said. “He’s had to deal with injuries, and he’s had to adjust to a new quarterback. But despite all of that, he’s still been able to make plays for us. He’s a guy who is all about the team, and he’s willing to do whatever it takes to help us win.”
Day’s comments were a significant departure from his previous statements about Smith-Njigba. Earlier in the season, Day had hinted that Smith-Njigba’s playing time might be reduced due to his struggles. However, it appears that Day has changed his tune, and is now committed to getting Smith-Njigba more involved in the offense.
“Jaxon is a guy who can make plays for us,” Day said. “We need to find ways to get him the ball more often. He’s a guy who can be a game-changer for us, and we need to make sure we’re utilizing him to the best of our ability.”
Smith-Njigba’s teammates also came to his defense on Tuesday, praising his work ethic and dedication to the team.
“Jaxon is a guy who is always giving his all,” said Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud. “He’s a guy who is always pushing himself to be better, and he’s always looking for ways to help the team. He’s a true leader, and we’re lucky to have him on our team.”
With the Buckeyes’ season winding down, it’s unclear how much more playing time Smith-Njigba will receive. However, it’s clear that Day and the rest of the Ohio State coaching staff are committed to getting him more involved in the offense.
“Jaxon is a guy who can make a difference for us,” Day said. “We need to make sure we’re giving him the opportunities to do so.”
