KNOXVILLE, TN – In a shocking turn of events, five-star prospect Hannah Hidalgo has decommitted from the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and flipped her commitment to the Tennessee Volunteers. The news sent shockwaves through the college softball world, with Hidalgo being one of the most highly touted recruits in the 2026 class.

Hidalgo, a standout shortstop from California, had been committed to Notre Dame since last summer, but it appears that the Volunteers’ coaching staff made a strong impression on her during a recent visit to Knoxville.

“I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve committed to the University of Tennessee,” Hidalgo said in a statement. “The coaching staff, the team, and the entire athletic department made me feel like I was part of the family from the moment I stepped on campus. I’m excited to be a part of the Lady Vols’ tradition of excellence and to help bring a national championship to Knoxville.”

The Volunteers’ coaching staff, led by head coach Karen Weekly, has been instrumental in landing Hidalgo’s commitment. Weekly, who has been at the helm of the Lady Vols’ program since 2002, has built a reputation as one of the top recruiters in the country, and her ability to land top talent has been a key factor in the program’s success.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Hannah to the Lady Vols’ family,” Weekly said. “She’s an exceptional player with a tremendous amount of talent and potential. We’re excited to see her develop and contribute to our program’s success in the years to come.”

Hidalgo’s commitment is a major coup for the Volunteers, who are looking to rebuild their program after a disappointing 2024 season. The Lady Vols have a rich tradition of excellence, having won two national championships and appearing in 11 Women’s College World Series.

The addition of Hidalgo, who is widely regarded as one of the top shortstops in the 2026 class, is expected to be a major boost to the Lady Vols’ lineup. She is known for her exceptional defensive skills, as well as her ability to hit for power and average.

“Hannah is a game-changer,” said Weekly. “She’s a player who can make an impact on the field from day one, and we’re excited to see her develop and grow as a player.”

The Lady Vols’ 2026 recruiting class is shaping up to be one of the best in the country, with Hidalgo joining a talented group of players who are committed to the program. The class includes several other top-ranked recruits, including pitcher Ashley Rogers and outfielder Emma Whitmore.

The Volunteers’ coaching staff is expected to continue to recruit top talent in the coming months, as they look to build on the momentum generated by Hidalgo’s commitment.

“We’re excited about the direction of our program and the talent that we’re bringing in,” said Weekly. “We’re looking forward to seeing Hannah and the rest of our 2026 class in action next fall.”
