, The Nebraska Cornhuskers have dropped their upcoming football series with the Tennessee Volunteers, and the Vols are not happy about it.
According to reports, Nebraska has canceled the two-game series, which was scheduled to take place in 2026 and 2027. The Cornhuskers cited “scheduling conflicts” as the reason for canceling the series.
Tennessee athletic director Danny White expressed his disappointment with Nebraska’s decision, stating that the Vols were looking forward to the series.
“We’re extremely disappointed that Nebraska has chosen to cancel our series,” White said. “We had been looking forward to hosting the Cornhuskers in Knoxville and traveling to Lincoln for what promised to be two exciting games. Unfortunately, it seems that Nebraska has other priorities.”
White also expressed frustration with the timing of Nebraska’s decision, which comes just a few years after the two teams agreed to the series.
“We had a signed contract in place, and we were excited to move forward with the series,” White said. “To have Nebraska cancel on us at this late stage is disappointing, to say the least. We’ll have to explore other options to fill the gaps in our schedule.”
Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel also weighed in on the situation, expressing his disappointment with Nebraska’s decision.
“We were looking forward to competing against a storied program like Nebraska,” Heupel said. “It’s unfortunate that they’ve chosen to cancel the series. We’ll have to move forward and find other opponents to challenge us.”
The cancellation of the series is a significant blow to Tennessee’s non-conference schedule, which was already lacking in terms of marquee opponents. The Vols will now have to scramble to find other teams to fill the gaps in their schedule.
Nebraska’s decision to cancel the series has also raised eyebrows among college football fans, who are wondering why the Cornhuskers would choose to drop a series with a team like Tennessee.
“It’s surprising that Nebraska would cancel a series with a team like Tennessee,” said ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit. “The Vols have a rich tradition of success, and they’re always a tough opponent. You would think that Nebraska would want to test themselves against a team like Tennessee.”
The cancellation of the series is also a reminder of the ever-changing landscape of college football, where scheduling conflicts and changes in conference alignments can lead to unexpected cancellations and changes in schedules.
As for Tennessee, the Vols will now have to focus on finding other opponents to fill the gaps in their schedule. It’s unclear at this point who the Vols will schedule in place of Nebraska, but one thing is certain: the Vols will be looking for opponents who are willing to compete against them.
“We’ll move forward and find other teams who are willing to challenge us,” White said. “We’re committed to building a strong schedule that will prepare us for the rigors of the SEC. We’ll find other opponents who share our commitment to excellence.”
