FORT MYERS, FL – Rafael Devers has been a mainstay at third base for the Boston Red Sox, and he has no intention of giving up the position without a fight.
Despite the team’s recent signing of Alex Bregman, who has primarily played third base throughout his career, Devers remains committed to sticking at the hot corner.
“I’m not frustrated,” Devers said through a translator. “I’m just focused on my work and trying to get better every day. I’ve been playing third base for a long time, and I feel comfortable there. I’m not worried about anything else.”
Devers’ comments come on the heels of a report that suggested he was unhappy about the team’s decision to sign Bregman. However, Devers denied those rumors, saying that he is focused solely on his own performance and helping the team win.
“I’m not worried about what other people are saying,” Devers said. “I’m just worried about what I can control, and that’s my own game. I’m trying to get better every day and help the team win.”
Red Sox manager Alex Cora echoed Devers’ sentiments, saying that the team is not looking to move Devers out of the third base spot.
“Rafael is our third baseman,” Cora said. “We’re not looking to move him anywhere else. He’s a talented player, and we’re confident that he can continue to play at a high level.”
Bregman, who has been diplomatic about the situation, said that he is happy to play wherever the team needs him.
“I’m just trying to help the team win,” Bregman said. “If that means playing second base, third base, or anywhere else, I’m happy to do it. I just want to contribute and help the team succeed.”
The situation at third base is likely to be a major storyline for the Red Sox throughout the season. However, Devers’ commitment to sticking at the position is clear, and it will be interesting to see how the team navigates the situation.
