BREAKING: Rice OL Transfer Ethan Onianwa on visit to FSU Football

Buckeyes land commitment from Transfer Portal O-tackle Ethan Onianwa

It’s been no secret the Buckeyes are looking to bolster their offensive line for next season through the transfer portal. In particular, offensive tackle is a priority position for Ohio State staff.

Today, Ryan Day, offensive line coach Justin and General Manager — Player Personnel Mark Pantoni have added a big piece to their 2025 roster as Rice offensive tackle Ethan Onianwa has announced that he has committed to Ohio State over Iowa, Texas A&M, Florida State, Oregon, Ole Miss, Baylor, WakeForest,Nebraska, Oklahoma and Boston college.

The 6-foot-6 and 345-pound Onianwa is a redshirt junior with one season of eligibility left. In 2022 and 2023, Onianwa was Rice’s starting right tackle. In 2024, he started for Rice at left tackle and allowed just one sack on 294 pass snaps and only three quarterback pressures.

Onianwa is from Katy (Texas) Cinco Ranch High School, class of 2021. His head coach there, Chris Dudley, described Onianwa as a “phenomenal young man with great potential.”

Onianwa has steadily improved each season at Rice, developing into a player Power 4 schools have sought. He arrives at Ohio State with plenty of experience, over 30 games of starting experience at the college level.

Onianwa’s commitment to Ohio State is big news. The Buckeyes are looking to fill two tackle spots for the 2025 season, and in Onianwa, they have a guy that has 30-plus games of starting experience at the college level. They also have a guy in Onianwa who has a ton of potential.

Onianwa has offensive tackle size and the potential to follow in the footsteps of Josh Simons, who entered the Ohio State program from San Diego State and was developed into an outstanding left tackle who will likely be selected in the first two rounds of this year’s NFL Draft in April. Onianwa is also capable of playing guard.

The Buckeyes are looking for depth for their 2025 offensive line as well as guys who have starter ability,  particularly at tackle. Onianwa absolutely fills that description and is a big addition for Frye.

When it comes to recruiting the transfer portal, the Buckeyes did extremely well with the group they brought in prior to the 2024 season.

They will lose a lot of talent from this season’s roster to the NFL Draft and Onianwa is a guy that can come into Ohio State and be developed relatively quickly into an NFL-caliber player. He has all the tools needed to excel at Ohio State and the next level as well.
