Guardiola was asked about the transfer and praised the Dutchman’s strength against star striker Erling Haaland and gave him some advice. A week later, Van Heck shared his memories of the meeting.

What did van Heck say?

“After the game, City manager Pep Guardiola came to see me. It was a good conversation. He congratulated me on my win and said we did well,” he told Allgemeine Dagblad. “He then talked about the last game against Holland, where he thought I should have stayed.

I said I fell, but I got up again. We continued to talk quietly in the players’ tunnel. “The conversation on the field was so visible that everyone was asking about it, and everyone wanted to know exactly what was being said. But coach Guardiola also praised me a lot. They said I was a good player. So I was fine.”

Haaland scored the first goal but failed to deliver a result for his team as Brighton fought back to snatch the three points, and Van Heke’s Dutch teammates attacked the Norwegian striker a few days later. “On Monday evening, several players from the Dutch national team were searching my pockets to check if Erling Haaland was still in the team,” he added. “But I have to be critical.

I won against City but it wasn’t in my pocket because Haaland scored. Saturday went very well. “We played well and if you beat Manchester City 2-1 you automatically get a lot of praise.”

Now what about Van Heck?

Van Heke joined Brighton in 2020 and enters his second season as a regular starter for the club. He made his Netherlands debut against Germany in September and hopes to feature in the starting XI against Hungary on Saturday.
