COLUMBUS, OH – In a historic moment for the Ohio State University women’s basketball program, head coach Kevin McGuff has been named the 2025 Naismith Coach of the Year, earning a $2 million award.
The prestigious honor, presented by the Atlanta Tipoff Club, recognizes McGuff’s outstanding leadership and dedication to the sport. Under his guidance, the Buckeyes have become a dominant force in college basketball, winning multiple Big Ten championships and making deep runs in the NCAA Tournament.
“I’m truly humbled to receive this incredible honor,” said McGuff. “It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire program, from our players to our coaching staff to our support staff. I’m so grateful to be a part of this amazing team.”
McGuff’s award is the largest ever given to a coach in the history of the Naismith Awards. The $2 million prize will be used to support the Ohio State women’s basketball program, as well as various charitable initiatives.
“Coach McGuff is an exceptional leader who has built a winning culture at Ohio State,” said Eric Oberman, executive director of the Atlanta Tipoff Club. “His commitment to excellence, both on and off the court, makes him an ideal recipient of this prestigious award.”
Under McGuff’s leadership, the Buckeyes have become known for their tenacious defense, explosive offense, and relentless competitiveness. His teams have consistently ranked among the nation’s best, and he has established himself as one of the premier coaches in the sport.
“Coach McGuff is a mastermind on the court, but he’s also an incredible mentor and role model for our players,” said Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith. “He’s built a program that’s not only successful, but also values education, community service, and personal growth. We’re thrilled to see him receive this well-deserved recognition.”
The Naismith Coach of the Year Award is presented annually to the top coach in women’s college basketball. The award is named in honor of Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of basketball.
