COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State football community is mourning the loss of a former player who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 30.
Darryl Baldwin, a former Ohio State defensive lineman, died after a long battle with health issues stemming from a blood clot condition that forced him to retire from football in 2015.
Baldwin, a native of Solon, Ohio, played for the Buckeyes from 2011 to 2014, earning All-Big Ten honors as a senior. He was a key member of the Ohio State defensive line, helping the team win the Big Ten championship in 2014.
However, Baldwin’s football career was cut short due to a blood clot condition that caused him to experience severe pain and numbness in his legs. Despite undergoing surgery and treatment, Baldwin was forced to retire from football in 2015.
“It’s a tough day for the Ohio State football family,” said Ohio State head coach Ryan Day. “Darryl was a great player, but more importantly, he was a great person. He was a true Buckeye and will be deeply missed.”
After his retirement from football, Baldwin went on to pursue a career in coaching, serving as a graduate assistant at Ohio State and later as a defensive line coach at Youngstown State.
Baldwin’s former teammates and coaches took to social media to pay tribute to the former Buckeye, remembering him as a tough, physical player who was beloved by his teammates.
“Darryl was a true warrior on and off the field,” said former Ohio State linebacker Ryan Shazier. “He was a great teammate and an even better person. He will be deeply missed.”
Baldwin’s family released a statement on Tuesday, thanking the Ohio State community for their support and prayers during his battle with health issues.
“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved son, Darryl,” the statement read. “We are grateful for the outpouring of love and support from the Ohio State community, and we will always cherish the memories of Darryl’s time as a Buckeye.”
Baldwin’s funeral will be held on Saturday at the Solon Community Church, with a private burial to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the Baldwin family has asked that donations be made to the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s Vascular Surgery Department, in memory of Darryl’s courageous battle with blood clots.
