Diamond Vols Podcast: What to make of No. 4 Vols’ dominant Opening Weekend
KNOXVILLE, TN – The Diamond Vols Podcast is back, and this week, the crew is breaking down the No. 4 Tennessee Volunteers’ dominant opening weekend.
The Vols kicked off their 2025 season with a bang, sweeping their opening series against the Georgia Southern Eagles. Tennessee’s offense was on fire, scoring 27 runs over the three-game series, while the pitching staff allowed just six runs.
“I was really impressed with the way our team came out and played this weekend,” said Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello. “We had a lot of guys contribute, and our pitching staff was outstanding. It’s a great way to start the season.”
The Diamond Vols Podcast crew, consisting of hosts Wes Rucker and Ben McKee, dove into the details of the Vols’ dominant performance. They discussed the standout players from the weekend, including sophomore outfielder Kyle Booker, who hit .500 with two home runs and five RBIs.
“Kyle Booker was a man on a mission this weekend,” said Rucker. “He’s got the talent and the confidence to be a game-changer for this team.”
The crew also praised the Vols’ pitching staff, which allowed just six runs over the three-game series. Sophomore right-hander Drew Beam was particularly impressive, tossing six shutout innings in the series finale.
“Drew Beam was lights out on Sunday,” said McKee. “He’s got the stuff to be a Friday night starter, and he showed it this weekend.”
The Diamond Vols Podcast crew also discussed the Vols’ upcoming schedule, which includes a midweek game against the ETSU Buccaneers and a weekend series against the Indiana Hoosiers.
“We’re excited to see how the Vols respond to their first road test of the season,” said Rucker. “ETSU is always a tough opponent, and Indiana is a Big Ten team that’s going to come in here and give us a battle.”
Overall, the Diamond Vols Podcast crew was impressed with the Vols’ dominant opening weekend and is excited to see how the team builds on this momentum.
“It’s just one weekend, but it’s a great start,” said McKee. “We’re looking forward to seeing how the Vols respond to their next challenge.”
