Columbus, OH – It’s been over a year since quarterback Kyle McCord transferred from Ohio State to SMU, but the former Buckeye is still fielding questions about his time in Columbus.

In a recent interview with A to Z Sports, McCord set the record straight regarding his relationship with Ohio State head coach Ryan Day and the circumstances surrounding his transfer.

“I think there’s been a lot of misinformation out there about my time at Ohio State and my relationship with Coach Day,” McCord said. “I want to set the record straight and give my side of the story.”

McCord, a former 4-star recruit from Philadelphia, was a highly touted prospect when he arrived at Ohio State in 2020. However, he struggled to see the field behind incumbent starter C.J. Stroud, and eventually decided to transfer to SMU in search of more playing time.

“I loved my time at Ohio State, but I just didn’t feel like I was getting the opportunities I deserved,” McCord said. “I’m a competitor, and I want to be on the field making plays. When I didn’t see that happening at Ohio State, I knew it was time to look elsewhere.”

Despite his decision to transfer, McCord has maintained a positive relationship with Day and the Ohio State coaching staff.

“Coach Day and I are on great terms,” McCord said. “He’s a great coach and an even better person. We’ve talked several times since I transferred, and he’s always been supportive of me and my decision.”

McCord’s comments contradict reports from some media outlets that suggested he had a strained relationship with Day and the Ohio State coaching staff.

“I think some people took my transfer as a negative reflection on Coach Day and the Ohio State program,” McCord said. “But that’s not the case at all. I just needed a change of scenery and a fresh start, and SMU has been a great fit for me so far.”

McCord’s transfer to SMU has been a successful one so far, as he’s thrown for over 2,000 yards and 15 touchdowns in his first season as a starter.

“I’m loving my time at SMU,” McCord said. “The coaches, the players, the fans – everyone has been so supportive of me and my family. I’m excited to see what the future holds for us.”

As for his time at Ohio State, McCord has no regrets about his decision to transfer.

“I loved my time at Ohio State, but I knew it was time for me to move on,” McCord said. “I’m grateful for the experiences I had and the relationships I built, but I’m excited to be at SMU and competing for championships.”

Overall, McCord’s comments provide a unique perspective on his time at Ohio State and his decision to transfer. While some may have questioned his decision to leave Columbus, McCord is confident that he made the right choice for his football career and his personal well-being.
