Game Recap: Boston Red Sox vs. Northeastern Huskies

FORT MYERS, FL – The Boston Red Sox kicked off their spring training schedule on Thursday with a game against the Northeastern Huskies, a collegiate baseball team from Boston.

The Red Sox came out on top, winning the game 7-5 in a contest that was marked by strong pitching and timely hitting.

The Red Sox got off to a strong start, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Leadoff hitter Enrique Hernandez reached base on a walk and then advanced to second on a single by Rafael Devers. Hernandez then scored on a sacrifice fly by J.D. Martinez, and Devers came around to score on a single by Bobby Dalbec.

The Huskies fought back, however, scoring three runs in the top of the third inning to take a 3-2 lead. The Red Sox tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning on a solo home run by catcher Ronaldo Hernandez.

The Red Sox took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring two runs on a single by Dalbec and a sacrifice fly by Hernandez. They added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on a single by Devers and a sacrifice fly by Martinez.

The Huskies scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning, but it was too little, too late. Red Sox closer Matt Barnes came in to shut the door, striking out two batters to end the game.

Red Sox starter Tanner Houck pitched two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two batters. Reliever Kutter Crawford pitched two innings, allowing three runs on four hits and striking out one batter.

The Huskies’ starter, Eric Yost, pitched two innings, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out one batter. Reliever Kyle Dombrowski pitched two innings, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out one batter.

The Red Sox’s win was a positive start to their spring training schedule, which will continue on Friday with a game against the Minnesota Twins.

“It was a good first game,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “We saw some good things from our pitchers and hitters. We’re just trying to get everyone ready for the season and make sure we’re playing good baseball.”

The Red Sox’s lineup was filled with regulars, including Devers, Martinez, and Hernandez. The team also got a look at some of its top prospects, including Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell, who both started in the game.

Mayer, the Red Sox’s first-round pick in the 2021 MLB draft, started at shortstop and batted second in the lineup. He went 1-for-3 with a single and a walk.

Campbell, the Red Sox’s seventh-round pick in the 2021 MLB draft, started in center field and batted ninth in the lineup. He went 1-for-2 with a single and a run scored.

The Red Sox’s win was a positive start to their spring training schedule, and the team will look to build on that momentum as they continue to prepare for the regular season.

“We’re just trying to get everyone ready for the season and make sure we’re playing good baseball,” said Cora. “We’re excited to get started and see where the season takes us.”
