KNOXVILLE, TN – The University of Tennessee and the women’s college basketball community are celebrating a major milestone, as legendary Tennessee Lady Vols head coach Pat Summitt is set to receive a prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. The award, which is presented by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), recognizes Summitt’s unparalleled contributions to women’s college basketball.
Summitt, who coached the Lady Vols from 1974 to 2012, is widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches in the history of women’s college basketball. During her tenure at Tennessee, Summitt led the Lady Vols to eight national championships, 16 Southeastern Conference (SEC) championships, and 1,098 victories. Her teams also produced 21 All-Americans, 12 Olympians, and 15 WNBA players.
“Pat Summitt is a true icon in the world of women’s college basketball,” said NCAA President Mark Emmert. “Her dedication, passion, and commitment to excellence have inspired countless young women and coaches, and her legacy continues to shape the sport today. The Lifetime Achievement Award is the NCAA’s highest honor, and it is presented annually to individuals who have made significant contributions to college athletics. Summitt is the first women’s college basketball coach to receive the award, and she is being recognized for her tireless advocacy for women’s sports, her commitment to developing young women as athletes and leaders, and her unparalleled success on the court.
“Pat Summitt is a trailblazer, a pioneer, and a true legend in the world of women’s college basketball,” said University of Tennessee Chancellor Donde Plowman. “Her impact on the sport, on the University of Tennessee, and on the countless young women she has inspired is immeasurable. Summitt’s legacy extends far beyond her on-court success, however. She was a fierce advocate for women’s sports, and she played a key role in the development of the NCAA women’s basketball tournament. She also founded the Pat Summitt Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting women’s sports and promoting education and leadership development for young women.
