OMAHA, NE – The Tennessee Volunteers baseball team made history this week, advancing to the College World Series for the first time since 2005. The Vols, led by head coach Tony Vitello, took on the Virginia Cavaliers in their opening game on Sunday, June 16.
The game was a thrilling one, with the Vols coming from behind to win 6-5 in 10 innings. The victory marked Tennessee’s first College World Series win since 2005, and sent the team into a frenzy of excitement.
“It’s an incredible feeling,” said Vitello after the game. “These guys have worked so hard all season, and to see them rewarded with a win like this is just amazing.”
The Vols’ victory was fueled by a strong performance from their pitching staff, which included starter Chase Dollander and relievers Ben Joyce and Redmond Walsh. The trio combined to strike out 14 Virginia batters, while allowing just five runs on seven hits.
Tennessee’s offense was also on display, with the team scoring six runs on 10 hits. The Vols’ biggest hit of the game came in the bottom of the 10th inning, when designated hitter Blake Burke singled home the winning run.
The Vols’ win over Virginia was just the beginning of their College World Series run. On Tuesday, June 18, Tennessee took on the Arkansas Razorbacks in a thrilling game that saw the Vols come from behind once again to win 5-4.
The Vols’ victory over Arkansas was fueled by a strong performance from their offense, which included home runs from Burke and left fielder Jordan Beck. The team’s pitching staff was also solid, with starter Drew Beam and reliever Redmond Walsh combining to strike out 10 Arkansas batters.
Tennessee’s win over Arkansas sent the team into the winner’s bracket of the College World Series, where they will face off against the Auburn Tigers on Friday, June 21. The game will be a rematch of the SEC Tournament championship game, which Auburn won 11-6.
Despite the loss to Auburn in the SEC Tournament, the Vols are confident that they can come out on top in the College World Series. With their strong pitching staff and potent offense, Tennessee is a force to be reckoned with in Omaha.
“We’re excited to be here and to have the opportunity to compete against the best teams in the country,” said Vitello. “We’re going to take it one game at a time and see where it takes us.”
