Rafael Devers, the Boston Red Sox’s star third baseman, has been at the center of a positional controversy since the team signed Alex Bregman to a multi-year deal.
However, Devers says he’s “not frustrated” with the Red Sox amid the buzz surrounding Bregman’s potential role with the team.
“I’m just focused on my own game and trying to get better every day,” Devers said through a translator. “I’m not worried about what other people are saying or what the team is planning. I just want to play baseball and help the team win.”
The Red Sox signed Bregman to a six-year, $100 million contract in the offseason, sparking speculation that he would take over at third base. However, Devers has been the team’s primary third baseman for the past few seasons, and he’s made it clear that he’s not willing to give up the position without a fight.
“I’ve worked hard to become the player I am today, and I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished,” Devers said. “I’m not going to let anyone take that away from me. I’m going to keep working hard and doing what I do best – playing baseball.”
Red Sox manager Alex Cora has said that the team is committed to finding a way to get both Devers and Bregman in the lineup, but it’s unclear what that will look like. Bregman has played primarily at third base throughout his career, but he’s also played some second base and shortstop.
“We’re going to find a way to make it work,” Cora said. “We’ve got two talented players, and we’re going to find a way to get them both in the lineup. We’ll figure it out as we go along.”
Devers and Bregman have both been working out at third base during spring training, and it’s clear that the competition for the position is heating up. However, Devers says he’s not worried about the competition – he’s just focused on getting better every day.
“I’m not worried about what Alex is doing or what the team is planning,” Devers said. “I’m just worried about my own game and trying to get better every day. If I do that, I’ll be happy with whatever role I’m given.”
The Red Sox will continue to evaluate their options at third base as spring training progresses. However, one thing is clear – Devers is committed to fighting for the position, and he’s not going to give up without a fight.
