Ryan Day is already looking toward a future moment with Chip Kelly and himself after Ohio State’s OC left for the NFL

Ohio State was hit with some tough news over the weekend that they would have to replace their offensive coordinator in addition to their defensive coordinator.

and his jump to the NFL is not a surprise. However, now the Buckeyes have another task to handle on the menu.

Kelly only got one year in Columbus to work with his longtime friend and head coach Ryan Day. Still, the two accomplished the big picture together and they’ll always have that.

“We talked about it, the fact that we had a really good group in here and, you know, the dream would be to win a national championship, and then he decides whether he wants to stay or have an opportunity to go to the NFL, and it is exactly what happened,” Day explained.

“To be able to, you know, have a beer in a few years and talk about the year we had together is going to be special because we all started together.”

Day originally hired Bill O’Brien to be the offensive coordinator, then the head coaching job at Boston College came open and O’Brien took it. That is when Day turned to his friend, Kelly, to come and call plays in Columbus. Day gave up play-calling duties for the first time in his career at Ohio State to Kelly and that just goes to show his trust in him.

Ohio State had terrific talent on offense in 2024 and that made Kelly’s job a lot easier. Ohio State’s offense clicked all season outside of the Michigan game, so Kelly garnering outside interest was not a surprise.

A title was worth the move for Kelly to come to Columbus and for Day to bring him in. Now the two longtime friends will be able to talk about the 2024 season forever.
