Sources: Tennessee Football makes trio of coaching moves

KNOXVILLE, TN – The Tennessee Volunteers football program has made a trio of coaching moves, according to sources. The moves are aimed at strengthening the team’s coaching staff and improving the program’s overall performance.

The first move is the hiring of Mike Ekeler as the team’s new linebackers coach. Ekeler comes to Tennessee from North Carolina, where he spent the past three seasons as the Tar Heels’ linebackers coach. Ekeler has a strong track record of developing talented linebackers, and his experience in the ACC will be valuable in recruiting and game planning.

The second move is the promotion of Joe Osovet to tight ends coach. Osovet has been on the Tennessee staff for the past two seasons, serving as a graduate assistant and then as the team’s director of football operations. Osovet has a strong background in tight end play, having played the position himself at Wake Forest, and his experience working with the team’s offense will be valuable in developing the tight end position.

The third move is the hiring of Willie Martinez as the team’s new defensive backs coach. Martinez comes to Tennessee from Auburn, where he spent the past two seasons as the Tigers’ defensive backs coach. Martinez has a strong track record of developing talented defensive backs, and his experience in the SEC will be valuable in recruiting and game planning.

“We’re excited to welcome Mike, Joe, and Willie to our coaching staff,” said Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel. “Each of them brings a unique set of skills and experiences that will help us improve our team and compete at the highest level. We’re looking forward to getting to work with them and seeing the impact they’ll have on our program.”

The trio of coaching moves is the latest in a series of changes aimed at strengthening the Tennessee football program. The team has also made significant investments in its facilities and support staff, and has brought in a number of talented recruits in recent years.

“We’re committed to building a championship-caliber program here at Tennessee,” said Heupel. “We’re going to do everything we can to support our coaches and players and give them the resources they need to succeed. We’re excited about the future of Tennessee football, and we’re looking forward to getting to work with our new coaches.”

The coaching moves are expected to be officially announced by the university in the coming days. In the meantime, the team is preparing for the start of spring practice, which is scheduled to begin in late March.

“We’re looking forward to getting started with spring practice and seeing the impact our new coaches will have on our team,” said Heupel. “We’re going to work hard, we’re going to compete, and we’re going to do everything we can to prepare ourselves for the season ahead.”

The Tennessee Volunteers are coming off a 7-6 season in 2022, which included a bowl game appearance. The team is looking to build on that success and compete for a championship in the highly competitive Southeastern Conference.

“We’re excited about the future of Tennessee football,” said Heupel. “We’re going to work hard, we’re going to compete, and we’re going to do everything we can to bring a championship to the Volunteer State.”
