The Boston Red Sox kicked off their spring training schedule on Thursday, and two of the team’s top prospects, Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell, made their debuts in a game against the Northeastern Huskies.

Mayer, the Red Sox’s first-round pick in the 2021 MLB draft, started at shortstop and batted second in the lineup. The 19-year-old infielder had a solid debut, going 1-for-3 with a single and a walk.

Mayer’s single came in the top of the third inning, when he lined a pitch from Northeastern starter, Eric Yost, into center field. He also drew a walk in the top of the fifth inning, showing off his patience and discipline at the plate.

Defensively, Mayer looked smooth and comfortable at shortstop, making a few nice plays in the field. He showed off his range and agility, making a diving stop on a ground ball in the top of the fourth inning.

Campbell, the Red Sox’s seventh-round pick in the 2021 MLB draft, started in center field and batted ninth in the lineup. The 22-year-old outfielder had a solid debut, going 1-for-2 with a single and a run scored.

Campbell’s single came in the top of the sixth inning, when he lined a pitch from Northeastern reliever, Kyle Dombrowski, into left field. He also scored a run in the top of the eighth inning, coming around on a single by Red Sox catcher, Ronaldo Hernandez.

Defensively, Campbell looked solid in center field, making a few nice plays and showing off his range and agility. He also threw out a runner at the plate in the top of the fifth inning, showing off his strong arm.

Overall, both Mayer and Campbell had solid debuts in their first spring training game. They showed off their skills and abilities, and looked comfortable and confident on the field.

“It was great to see Marcelo and Kristian out there competing,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “They’re both talented players, and they’ve been working hard to develop their skills. It’s exciting to see them take the next step and compete against other teams.”

The Red Sox will continue their spring training schedule on Friday, when they take on the Minnesota Twins. Mayer and Campbell are both expected to play in the game, and will look to build on their solid debuts.

As for Mayer and Campbell, they’re both just happy to be competing and playing baseball.

“It’s an amazing feeling to be out here playing with the Red Sox,” said Mayer. “I’m just trying to take it all in and learn as much as I can. It’s a great opportunity for me, and I’m excited to see where it takes me.”

“I’m just trying to enjoy the experience and take it one day at a time,” said Campbell. “It’s an honor to be playing with the Red Sox, and I’m going to do everything I can to make the most of it.”
