– The Tennessee Volunteers baseball team continued their dominant start to the season, humiliating the Hofstra Pride for the second consecutive day with a 14-2 seven-inning rout.
The Vols, who won 15-0 on Friday and 12-2 on Saturday, completed the series sweep with another impressive performance. They pounded out 14 hits, including four home runs, and scored 14 runs to take the win.
Tennessee’s offense was led by junior outfielder, Christian Scott, who went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Scott’s home run was his third of the season, and he is now hitting .571 with six RBIs.
“Christian is a special player,” said Tennessee head coach, Tony Vitello. “He’s got a lot of power and a lot of speed. He’s a guy who can change the game with one swing of the bat.”
The Vols’ pitching staff was also impressive, with sophomore right-hander, Drew Beam, tossing five innings to earn the win. Beam allowed just two runs on four hits, and struck out six.
“Drew was outstanding today,” said Vitello. “He’s got a lot of talent and a lot of poise. He’s a guy who can pitch in big games and come out on top.”
The Vols’ defense was solid, committing just one error and turning a double play.
“We’re playing well right now,” said Vitello. “We’re hitting, pitching, and defending. We’re doing all the things we need to do to win games.”
The loss was Hofstra’s third consecutive, and dropped their record to 0-3. The Pride were led by senior outfielder, Ryan Morash, who went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.
“Hofstra is a good team,” said Vitello. “They’ve got some talented players, and they’re well-coached. We’re just playing well right now, and we’re taking advantage of our opportunities.”
The Vols will look to continue their winning ways on Tuesday, when they host the Eastern Kentucky Colonels at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
“We’re feeling good right now,” said Scott. “We’re playing well, and we’re having fun. We’re just taking it one game at a time and enjoying the ride.”
The Vols’ dominant start to the season has them ranked #1 in the country, according to the latest polls. They will look to continue their winning ways and make a deep run in the NCAA tournament.
“We’re not going to let our ranking define us,” said Vitello. “We’re going to use it as motivation to get better and to make another run at a championship. We’re excited to see what this season holds.”
