The Texas Longhorns and head coach Steve Sarkisian are facing immense pressure in 2025, and it’s not just because of the usual expectations that come with being a top-tier college football program.
After a 9-4 season in 2024, which ended with a disappointing loss to Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, the Longhorns are expected to take the next step and compete for a national championship. Anything less will be considered a disappointment.
Sarkisian, who is entering his fourth season as the Longhorns’ head coach, is feeling the heat. Despite his impressive resume, which includes stints as the head coach at Washington and USC, Sarkisian has yet to deliver a championship-caliber season at Texas.
“The pressure is always there when you’re coaching at a place like Texas,” Sarkisian said. “But I think we’ve got a good team coming back, and I’m excited to see what we can do.”
The Longhorns return a talented roster, led by quarterback Quinn Ewers, who is expected to be one of the top quarterbacks in the country. The team also boasts a stout defense, which is led by defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski.
However, despite the talent on the roster, there are still concerns about the team’s ability to compete with the top programs in the country. The Longhorns have struggled against top-tier opponents in recent years, and there are questions about whether they have the depth and talent to compete with teams like Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State.
“The schedule is always tough in the Big 12, but we’ve got to find a way to beat those top teams,” Sarkisian said. “We’ve got to find a way to win those close games and make a deep run in the playoffs.”
The pressure on Sarkisian and the Longhorns is not just about winning games, it’s also about recruiting. The team has struggled to land top recruits in recent years, and there are concerns that the program is falling behind its rivals in terms of talent and depth.
“We’ve got to do a better job of recruiting,” Sarkisian said. “We’ve got to find a way to get those top players to come to Texas and help us build a championship-caliber team.”
Despite the pressure, Sarkisian remains confident that the Longhorns can compete for a national championship in 2025.
“I think we’ve got a good team, and I think we’ve got a good chance to make a deep run in the playoffs,” Sarkisian said. “We’ve just got to go out and execute and play to our potential.”
The Longhorns open the 2025 season on September 7 against Rice, and the pressure will be on from the very start.
