COLUMBUS, Ohio – Donovan Munger, a former Ohio State football player who won a national title with the Buckeyes in 2014, has passed away at the age of 30.

 

Munger, a defensive tackle from Shaker Heights, Ohio, played for the Buckeyes from 2012 to 2015. He was a key contributor to the team’s national championship season in 2014, when Ohio State defeated Oregon 42-20 in the College Football Playoff National Championship game.

 

According to reports, Munger passed away on Wednesday, February 22, although the cause of death has not been disclosed.

 

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Donovan Munger,” said Ohio State head coach Ryan Day in a statement. “Donovan was a valued member of our Buckeye family, and his contributions to our program will never be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

 

Munger was a highly respected player during his time at Ohio State, known for his toughness, athleticism, and dedication to the team. He played in 42 games for the Buckeyes, recording 52 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, and 2 sacks.

 

After his playing career, Munger went on to work as a coach and mentor, helping to develop young players in the Columbus area.

 

“Donovan was an outstanding young man who made a lasting impact on our program,” said Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith. “His passion, energy, and commitment to excellence inspired his teammates and coaches alike. We will miss him dearly, and our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”

 

Munger’s passing has sent shockwaves through the Ohio State community, with many of his former teammates and coaches taking to social media to pay tribute to his memory.

 

“Rest in peace, Donovan,” wrote former Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones on Twitter. “You were a true Buckeye and a great teammate. You will be missed.”

 

“Devastating news about Donovan Munger,” wrote former Ohio State defensive lineman Michael Bennett. “He was a great guy and a true leader on our team. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones.”

 

A memorial service for Munger is planned for next week, although details have not been finalized.

 

In lieu of flowers, Munger’s family has requested that donations be made to the Ohio State University Athletic Department’s scholarship fund in his name.

 

“Donovan’s legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched during his time at Ohio State,” said Day. “We will continue to celebrate his life and honor his memory in the days and weeks to come.”
