
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State football community is mourning the loss of a former player who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 30.
Donovan Munger, a former Ohio State defensive lineman, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, according to a statement released by his family.
Munger, a native of Shaker Heights, Ohio, played for the Buckeyes from 2012 to 2015, earning All-Big Ten honorable mention honors as a senior. He was a key member of the Ohio State defensive line, helping the team win the Big Ten championship in 2014.
After his playing career, Munger went on to pursue a career in coaching, serving as a graduate assistant at Ohio State and later as a defensive line coach at several high schools in the Cleveland area.
Munger’s former teammates and coaches took to social media to pay tribute to the former Buckeye, remembering him as a tough, physical player who was beloved by his teammates.
“Donovan was a true Buckeye and a great teammate,” said former Ohio State linebacker Ryan Shazier. “He was a physical player who always gave his all on the field. He will be deeply missed.”
Munger’s family released a statement on Tuesday, thanking the Ohio State community for their support and prayers during this difficult time.
“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved son, Donovan,” the statement read. “We are grateful for the outpouring of love and support from the Ohio State community, and we will always cherish the memories of Donovan’s time as a Buckeye.”
Munger’s funeral will be held on Saturday at the Shaker Heights Community Church, with a private burial to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the Munger family has asked that donations be made to the Ohio State University Athletic Department’s scholarship fund, in memory of Donovan’s love for Ohio State football.
“Donovan was a true Buckeye and a great ambassador for our program,” said Ohio State head coach Ryan Day. “He will be deeply missed by our entire community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”
Munger’s passing is a shock to the Ohio State community, and it serves as a reminder of the fragility of life.
