KNOXVILLE, TN – The Tennessee Volunteers baseball team began their quest to defend their national title in impressive fashion, defeating the Hofstra Pride 15-0 in their season opener.

The Vols, who won their first national championship in program history last season, showed no signs of a championship hangover, dominating the Pride from start to finish.

Tennessee’s offense was led by senior outfielder, Drew Gilbert, who went 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs. Gilbert’s impressive performance was matched by his teammates, as the Vols pounded out 15 hits and scored 15 runs.

“We’re excited to get the season started and defend our national title,” said Gilbert. “We know it’s going to be a tough road, but we’re confident in our abilities and we’re ready to get to work.”

The Vols’ pitching staff was equally impressive, with senior right-hander, Chase Dollander, tossing five shutout innings to earn the win. Dollander, who was named the College World Series Most Outstanding Player last season, allowed just two hits and struck out six.

“Chase was dominant today,” said Tennessee head coach, Tony Vitello. “He set the tone for our team and gave us a chance to get off to a great start.”

The Vols’ defense was also solid, committing just one error and turning two double plays.

“We played a complete game today,” said Vitello. “Our offense was clicking, our pitching was outstanding, and our defense was solid. It’s a great way to start the season.”

The win was Tennessee’s 15th consecutive victory, dating back to last season. The Vols will look to extend their winning streak on Saturday, when they host the Hofstra Pride in game two of their three-game series.

“We’re not going to get too high or too low,” said Gilbert. “We’re going to stay focused and take it one game at a time. We know it’s going to be a tough road, but we’re ready for the challenge.”

The Vols’ quest to defend their national title will not be easy, but they are confident in their abilities and are ready to face whatever challenges come their way.

“We’re not going to let our national championship define us,” said Vitello. “We’re going to use it as motivation to get better and to make another run at a championship. We’re excited to see what this season holds.”

The Tennessee Volunteers will host the Hofstra Pride in game two of their three-game series on Saturday at 2:00 PM ET. The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network+.
